Tips For Taking Fido To The Park

May 15, 2023

Now that the warm weather has returned, many of our canine buddies are happily returning to their favorite parks. It’s great for dogs to run and play with their pals, and just enjoy a change of scenery. However, there are a few do’s and don’ts to keep in mind here. A local Temecula, CA vet lists some of them in this article.

Preventative Care

Don’t take Fido to the park unless he’s up to date on his preventative care. That includes not only parasite control, but also his vaccinations. We would recommend getting some of the non-core vaccines as well, such as Bordetella.

Choosing Playmates

Take a look around the park before letting your canine companion off-leash. If you see any aggressive dogs, it’s best to play it safe. Take Fido for a walk, and come back another time.

Water

Many parks offer water features, such as fountains or faucets. Some even have pet fountains or pools for Fido to play in. However, it’s best to always bring some along, just in case.

Leash

Retractable leashes can be great, but they aren’t really a good choice for dog parks, as Fido could get tangled up with another pooch. Keep a regular leash in your car, and use that to bring your pup in and out of the car.

Toys/Snacks

Parks can be a great place to toss a ball or Frisbee for Fido, or maybe work on his training a bit. However, keep in mind that your pup’s playmates can get a bit jealous, and may want his things. Pay attention to the dogs that are nearby. This applies to food, as well. It may seem convenient to grab a burger on the way to the park and have dinner there, but you may attract some unwanted attention from your pet’s four-legged friends.

Weather

Overheating is a big risk for dogs in summer. Take Fido to the park in the mornings and evenings, when it’s cooler out.

Cleaning

Always bring waste baggies along with you, so you can pick up after your furry best buddy. Many parks do provide them, but these are just something that are good to have with you.
