Senior Cat Care

April 15, 2023

The world of veterinary medicine has come a long way in recent decades, as the technical advances humanity has made in recent years is also benefiting our animal companions. It’s not uncommon for kitties to live into their late teens or even early twenties with good care. Fluffy will still reach her senior years around the same time as her ancestors did, usually around age ten or so. She’ll still be the same lovable ball of fur as ever, but she’ll need some extra attention as she ages. A Temecula, CA vet offers some advice on keeping older cats happy and healthy below.

Watch For Warning Signs

Older pets are susceptible to illness, injury, and disease, just as older people are. Watch for indications that your furball isn’t feeling well, such as changes in appetite, appearance, or behavior. These may be very subtle at first: cats generally try to hide any indications of weakness. Contact your vet right away if you spot anything that seems off.

Ground The Furball

We recommend keeping all cats indoors, but this is especially important for seniors. Senior kitties sometimes become confused and forgetful, which greatly increases the risk of them getting lost. Fluffy will also be slower and weaker than she once was, which will make her more vulnerable to predators and other threats.

Senior-Friendly Home

If you have more than one level in your home, you may want to get extra litterboxes. That way, Fluffy won’t have to use the stairs as much. Nightlights will help your furball find her way around after dark. If your feline pal stays home alone during the day, leave a light and a radio on for her.

Small Comforts

Cats are very, very good at getting comfortable. However, they always appreciate having more options for places to nap, relax, meditate, and judge you. Offer Fluffy lots of comfy beds and napping spots to choose from.

Playtime

Playing is just as fun and beneficial for senior cats as it is for kittens. Try to play with your feline buddy every day. The exercise and stimulation will benefit her both mentally and physically.

Love

Making sure Fluffy feels happy, loved, and safe is very important. Pay lots of attention to your cute pet, and keep that motor going!
