7 Ways to Kittyproof Your Tree

Are you putting a tree up this year? If you have a kitty, you may want to take a few precautions. Ravaging holiday trees is one of Fluffy’s favorite seasonal traditions! Read on as a Temecula, CA vet offers tips on how to keep your tree safe from your frisky little feline.

Decorate Wisely

The way you decorate your tree can help make it less appealing to your furball. Decorate the bottom part of the tree sparingly, and only with sturdy, unbreakable objects. Put the shiny, delicate ornaments, as well as the majority of the lights and tinsel, on the top part.

Choose The Right Location

Picking the right spot is also very important. Try to put the tree in a corner, if possible. That way, your kitty can only approach it from one side. Don’t put the tree near something Fluffy could use to reach it, like a desk or sofa.

Go Artificial

If Fluffy has a past record of knocking your trees over, you may want to choose an artificial one. Your kitty probably won’t be able to climb it. Plus, you’ll be able to use it again next year!

Secure The Treetop

Use clear fishing line to anchor the top of the tree to the wall or ceiling. This won’t show, but it will provide some extra support.

Block Fluffy’s Access

If all else fails, try putting a baby gate up in front of the tree. Fluffy can’t wreck the tree if she can’t get to it!

Consider giving your cat some of her gifts early. If Fluffy is tired out after playing with her new fuzzy squirrel toy, she may fall asleep under the tree, instead of trying to climb it.

Never punish Fluffy for approaching the tree. However, you can make her a bit wary of it. When your furball gets too close to the tree, squirt her with water or make a loud noise. These things will annoy your pet, which may be enough to make her change her mind about approaching the tree.

Trees can be just as dangerous to kitties as kitties are to trees. Tinsel, ornaments, lights, ornament hooks, and pine needles are all hazardous to cats. Keep these things out of reach of those adorable little paws!
